Four Tips to Get Rid of Acne for Good

Posted on: 25 February 2019

Acne can be painful and itchy. It can also cause some serious damage to your self-confidence. If you've tried everything to get rid of your acne, you may be frustrated and losing hope of ever having clear skin. Fortunately, there is probably an acne treatment you haven't tried yet. Here are four easy tips to help you get rid of your acne once and for all:

1. Utilize Over-The-Counter Topical Medication

Topical creams can be very effective at reducing acne if you're using the right one for your skin type. Benzoyl peroxide is a great active ingredient that can dry up your acne spots and kill any existing bacteria on your skin. Adapalene is another promising acne medication. It used to be available by prescription only, but in recent years the Food and Drug Administration has cleared it for over-the-counter use. Adapalene is a retinoid that increases cell turnover, which fights acne before it starts. You can ask a dermatologist about other over-the-counter options.

2. Look Into Anti-Inflammatory Injection Therapy

If you have large, painful cystic acne, anti-inflammatory injection therapy can help. Your dermatologist will inject special medication into your cysts, and over the next few days, those cysts will shrink and eventually disappear. This can prevent further infection since burst pimples are open wounds which can collect bacteria. It can also help to prevent scarring that comes from popping pimples or allowing them to break.

3. Don't Be Afraid of Chemical Peels.

In some cases, you may need your dermatologist's assistance to get rid of stubborn acne. Chemical peels can be effective at reducing acne. This is a type of deep exfoliation which utilizes acidic chemicals to slough off the top layer of your skin. Chemical peels can eradicate your blackheads and pimples. As a bonus, it can also reduce the appearance of wrinkles and help you look younger.

4. Take Care of Scarring

Unfortunately, acne can leave scars behind. These can come in the form of dark spots of hyperpigmentation or indented pockmarks. Fight hyperpigmentation by wearing sunscreen to help the marks fade more quickly. Indented scars are harder to get rid of, but a dermatologist will be able to help you. Laser treatment is very effective at getting rid of acne scarring. Your dermatologist will use a laser to remove the top layer of your skin along with your scars. This will allow a new, healthy layer of skin to grow in its place
